What are the symptoms of Sinusitis?
Sinusitis has 5 key symptoms:
- Nasal obstruction or congestion
- Runny nose with either thick clear mucous or yellow green mucous
- Persistent post nasal drip
- Reduction in smell or complete absence of smell
- Facial pain or congestion localised to the region of the sinuses
At least 2 of these 5 symptoms must be present for a diagnosis of sinusitis to be made- one of which must be nasal obstruction or nasal discharge ( runny nose or post nasal drip).
Headaches and facial pain are often confused with "sinusitis". In the absence of co-existing symptoms of nasal obstruction and/ or runny nose this is extremely unlikely.
How is sinusitis treated?
Sinusitis is initially treated with medical therapy. This involves a course of oral antibiotics, oral and topical steroids and saline douching of the nose. A large number of patients respond to this treatment alone, and no further treatment is required.
What happens if medical treatment fails?
Unfortunately, in a number of patients, medical therapy seems to work well while on the treatment, but then the symptoms return after the treatment ceases. In this case, Endoscopic Sinus Surgery has been shown to be beneficial in improving symptoms.
What is Endoscopic Sinus Surgery or FESS?
FESS stands for Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.
The aim of surgery is to promote normal ventilation of the sinuses by widening the natural openings of the sinuses and washing out the sinuses of all inflammatory mediators ( infection, fungus , polyps , allergic mucin). Surgery also facilitates long term medical treatment of the sinuses by utilising topical therapy ( saline washes and steroid washes) rather than the use of long term antibiotics and oral steroids which can have serious side effects.
Where is surgery performed?
Small procedures are often performed in our rooms which are fully equipped with microscopes and endoscopes. Larger procedures are performed in hospitals.
Which hospitals do you work at?
Private patients are treated at The Sydney Adventist Hopsital ("The San") in Wahroonga, North Shore Private (St Leonards), and Macquarie University Private (Macquarie Park), Campbelltown Private (Campbelltown) and Sydney South West Private (Liverpool)
Public patients are treated at either Auburn or Concord Hospitals
